On Sunday, November 1, Hyde Park's three National Park Service sites change their schedules on the same day. Tours of Val-Kill Cottage end for the year. Home of FDR home tours switch to a shorter winter schedule. The road down to Bard Rock at Vanderbilt closes to cars. Most of what changes is indoors. The lawns, river overlooks and woodland trails keep their daily hours through the winter, and the people who can use them best are the ones who live a few minutes up or down Route 9.
The Last Week on the Summer Schedule
By Thursday there are still nine days before the switch, and a few things are worth getting to before then.
The Hyde Park Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4390 Albany Post Road, across from Town Hall, and its season ends October 31. That leaves two Saturdays, October 24 and October 31.
October 24 has more going on. The Home of FDR's park calendar lists "Rethinking the Fall Garden Cleanup" at 10:30 a.m. that morning. The topic fits a year when the site's Rose Garden planting beds, lawns and paths have been under rehabilitation. NPS scheduled that work to run from late March through fall 2026, so check the site's alerts page for current garden access. That afternoon, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Hyde Park Railroad Station Museum hosts the Hudson Valley T-Trak Contest.
If dinner at the Culinary Institute of America is on the list, plan around The Bocuse Restaurant's calendar. It serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday at 1946 Campus Drive, but it lists closures on October 27 through 29 and again on November 3.
What Changes on November 1, Site by Site
Each site handles the switch differently, and the details decide which visits still work after November 1.
- Val-Kill Cottage, Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site. Guided tours stop on November 1. The NPS hours page lists them as closed through May 21 and gives May 22 as a tentative reopening date. The Stone Cottage Visitor Center, where the free tour tickets are handed out, is listed as closed November 1 through May 31.
- Home of FDR National Historic Site. Home tours move to the winter and spring schedule, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The park lists Veterans Day, November 11, as an open day. Thanksgiving, November 26, and Christmas, December 25, are listed as closed for both tours and grounds.
- Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. Tours keep the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule through November 15. After that they run 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with tickets sold first come, first served at the Visitor Center. Bard Rock Road and its parking lot close to vehicles from November 1 through April 30.
Val-Kill, where both the cottage and the Stone Cottage Visitor Center close, is the site that goes dark indoors for the winter. The FDR home and the Vanderbilt mansion keep offering daily tours outside the listed holiday closures, just with earlier last starts. On days when the light runs out early, the timing that matters is the last tour start, not the opening time.
The Grounds Keep Their Hours
The grounds hours are listed separately from tour hours.
All three NPS sites list the same grounds hours, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. At Vanderbilt and Val-Kill those hours apply every day except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Home of FDR lists the same 7-to-5 hours for its grounds from November 1 through January 31. Even with Val-Kill Cottage closed until spring, the land around it stays open every day except those holidays.
Vanderbilt makes this easiest. The park's fees section says there is no entrance fee. The Bard Rock change is narrower than it sounds. NPS says Bard Rock stays open to pedestrians during park operating hours even while vehicle access is unavailable for the winter. So the November 1 closure is about where you park. The riverside spot is still there. Getting to it just means walking down instead of driving.
Three Year-Round Trails, Plus Roosevelt Woods
The Roosevelt and Vanderbilt properties have a trail network that is easy to miss during tour season, when most visits run through a ticket desk. Four routes have current official listings:
- Vanderbilt Riverfront Trail, 2.5-mile loop. It starts at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site parking lot. NPS lists it as open daily from sunrise to sunset as a year-round activity. It is also the most direct way to reach Bard Rock on foot while the road is closed to cars.
- Eleanor's Walk at Val-Kill, 1-mile loop. From the main parking lot, cross the bridge and take the right fork. NPS lists it as open daily, sunrise to sunset, all year. It is the shortest of the four and needs the least planning, which helps on a short November afternoon.
- Top Cottage Trail, 2 miles round trip. The trailhead is south of Val-Kill's historic core, past the parking-lot access road. It has the same year-round, sunrise-to-sunset listing. Both Val-Kill trails start from the same lot, so one parking spot covers up to three miles of walking.
- Roosevelt Woods Trail, 3.3 miles round trip. The Town of Hyde Park's trail listing puts parking at the main Home of FDR lot and links both a site trail map and a Hyde Park Trail System map. The town listing does not say whether the trail is maintained in winter, so the FDR grounds hours are the safer guide.
Together that is close to nine miles of marked walking at three sites. In practice, the grounds' 5 p.m. closing and the early winter sunset set the length of an afternoon outing more than the distances do.
Evenings Indoors, Once the Tours Thin Out
Once the outdoor season gets shorter, Hyde Park's November and December calendar fills with small, dated indoor events, most of them a few minutes' drive from the estates.
The Railroad Station Museum has the longest list. The Hudson Valley Train Show runs November 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "Intro to Model Railroading" follows on November 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and a Polar Express book reading is set for December 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The FDR Library's events calendar lists a free screening of Citizen Kane at 2 p.m. on November 18 at the Henry A. Wallace Center. Registration is required.
At the CIA, the student-run public restaurants include American Bounty, The Bocuse Restaurant, Ristorante Caterina de' Medici and the Apple Pie Bakery Café, with the Post Road Brew House listed as a student pop-up venue. The Bocuse calendar is busy around the holidays. It lists a special opening on Monday, November 23, then closures from November 25 through December 1 and from December 18 through January 7, 2027. If the plan is a holiday-week dinner there, the Monday before Thanksgiving is the opening on that list.
Route 9 After Dark, Through the Same Weeks
The drive to all of this will be a little different this fall. The Town of Hyde Park posted a notice of Route 9 lane closures starting the week of October 19, along with a letter from Tilcon New York Inc.
Hudson Valley Post reported that Tilcon has a New York State DOT contract to mill and resurface about six miles of Route 9 across the Town of Hyde Park, the Town of Poughkeepsie and the City of Poughkeepsie. According to the outlet, most of the work will be done at night, with lane closures only during work hours. Work is expected to run four to six weeks before a winter shutdown, and Tilcon gave September 30, 2027, as the scheduled completion date.
Those four to six weeks overlap almost exactly with the first stretch of the off-season schedule. The grounds close at 5 p.m. and most of the paving happens at night, so a daytime walk at Vanderbilt or Val-Kill should mostly miss the work zones. An evening train show or a CIA dinner on the corridor may not.
If having the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt grounds close by in every season is part of why Hyde Park appeals to you, or part of what you would want to describe to a buyer someday, I'm always glad to talk about how this part of Dutchess County fits into everyday life.
